About these prices and charts

This page explains where the figures come from, how often they update, what the comparisons mean, and the limits of the information.

Purpose and limitations

Bullion Desk is provided for general informational and educational purposes only. It is not investment, financial, legal, tax, or trading advice, and it is not an offer, solicitation, or recommendation to buy or sell any asset.

Displayed prices are not executable quotes, bids, offers, or official settlement prices. Data may be delayed, stale, incomplete, unavailable, or inaccurate. Historical and normalized performance does not predict future results. Verify important information independently before making financial decisions.

Price sources and APIs

The price cards, Historical Price chart, and Relative Value chart use data collected server-side from Gold API for gold (XAU), silver (XAG), and platinum (XPT) in U.S. dollars. Current prices come from Gold API's current-price endpoint. Manual historical imports use its daily-average history endpoint.

Visitors' browsers request Bullion Desk's own same-origin endpoints: /api/prices/latest, /api/prices/history, and /api/prices/compare. Browsers do not call Gold API directly. Gold API does not supply bid, ask, or change fields in the response used here. Bullion Desk leaves bid and ask unavailable and calculates the displayed previous-day change separately from stored prices.

The provider's JSON does not contain a weight-unit field. Bullion Desk interprets its published per-ounce precious-metal prices as USD per troy ounce. See the Gold API documentation.

Updates and stale prices

Bullion Desk attempts to collect the three native prices every 15 minutes. The dashboard checks for updates on first load, when the refresh button is used, and automatically every 15 minutes. Normal page traffic cannot duplicate a successful collection in the same interval. After a scheduled attempt stores no prices, one page request may make one bounded recovery attempt.

Successful price API responses may be shared at the Cloudflare edge for up to 5 minutes. A price is marked stale when the source timestamp supplied by Gold API is more than 45 minutes old. Stale describes the age of the latest confirmed provider quote; it does not by itself say whether a market is closed or an API has failed.

Previous-day change

Dollar change equals the latest stored price minus the previous-day reference price. Percentage change equals that dollar change divided by the reference price, multiplied by 100.

The preferred reference is the first real stored observation in the 15-minute window beginning at 5:00 p.m. New York time on the previous weekday. If that observation is unavailable, Bullion Desk uses that weekday's stored UTC-day average and labels the card “daily avg.” If neither reference exists, the change is unavailable.

The weekday calculation skips Saturdays and Sundays but does not use an exchange-holiday calendar. The 5:00 p.m. observation and the daily-average fallback are application-defined references, not an official exchange close or settlement price.

Units and historical charts

Native prices are stored as USD per troy ounce. One troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams. Gram and kilogram selections are display conversions only; changing the unit does not refetch or alter the underlying observations.

Raw live observations are retained for 45 days. The 24H, 7D, and 30D ranges prefer those intraday observations and use real stored daily summaries for days where no retained raw observation exists. The 6M and 1Y ranges use daily averages; 5Y and All use monthly averages. Large results may be averaged into additional display buckets, and a selected range may be partial when less history exists. No synthetic prices are inserted to fill gaps.

The Candles option is a simplified point-to-point movement view, not an open-high-low-close candlestick chart. Each bar spans two consecutive displayed values: green means the price rose, red means it fell, and gray means it was unchanged.

Relative Value chart

Ratio divides Metal A's USD-per-troy-ounce price by Metal B's price. The result is the number of troy ounces of Metal B with the same displayed USD value as one troy ounce of Metal A. For example, Gold / Silver shows how many troy ounces of silver have the same value as one troy ounce of gold.

Normalized mode indexes both metals to 100 at the first displayed observation where both prices are available. Each later value is measured against that metal's own starting price: 105 means 5% above its start, while 95 means 5% below. It is not a direct percentage difference between the two metals.

Comparisons use observations from the same collection or summary period and do not combine unrelated timestamps.

TradingView and browser information

The Advanced Market Chart is a separate, display-only TradingView widget using OANDA XAUUSD, XAGUSD, and XPTUSD symbols by default. Bullion Desk does not control the widget's data, timing, methodology, or availability. Its values may differ from Bullion Desk's Gold API series and are not used in Bullion Desk calculations.

The widget loads directly from TradingView and retains its branding. TradingView states that its widgets set no cookies but receive the embedding page URL, widget type, displayed symbol, and visitor IP to operate the service. See TradingView's widget FAQ and policies.

Bullion Desk stores the chosen light or dark theme locally in the visitor's browser. The site does not provide accounts, portfolios, payments, or trade execution.
